The Machine That Couldn’t Travel

But the logistics defeated him, the machine needed to be booked four men and one week in advance, tuned into place the way a piano is tuned, bulky enough that moving it to Goa in time simply wasn’t possible. He was careful to frame this as a limitation of transport, not a criticism of the technology or the industry built around it.
The Substitute: A Bangle and a Claim
In its place, Shah called for a bangle, the kind of piece a customer might bring into any jewellery counter for verification. Inside it, copper had been deliberately embedded during construction, a stand-in for the sort of impurity a purity test is meant to catch. He asked for volunteers from the room to come up afterward and test it themselves, live, in front of the audience that had just heard him explain why the real machine couldn’t make the trip.
Evolution as the Point
What the moment was built to demonstrate was not the karatometer’s engineering, but the idea sitting underneath it: that surface testing for gold purity, done right, should be able to catch something as simple and as deliberately placed as a copper core inside a bangle. Shah returned more than once to the phrase evolution is the name of the game, a reminder that the loan and jewellery trade built on visual and manual purity checks has served the industry for generations, but that the next stage of that same trade needs a test that can be trusted at the scale of an entire household-gold economy, not just at the counter of a single jeweller.

The unavailability of the actual device, in the end, did not undercut the demonstration, if anything, it sharpened it. A bangle, a hidden piece of copper, and an open invitation to test it were enough to make the argument that the karatometer itself was built to make at scale.
